Largemouth lures: build the box around cover and depth

Choose a few baits that cover the water you fish instead of buying a separate answer to every fishing story.

Start with your actual lake

A grass-filled shallow lake and a rocky reservoir need different emphasis. Our basic approach is a weedless plastic for cover, a moving bait for searching and a presentation that reaches the deeper water you actually fish. Add a surface bait where it fits. A useful box is allowed to be small; the boat already has enough places to lose your pliers.

Give shallow cover two speeds

A Texas rig or jig can enter a specific opening and fall beside it. A spinnerbait, bladed jig or swim jig can cover suitable lanes between targets. Choose hooks and profile for the cover. When the moving bait gets a follow or a missed strike, the slower bait has a clear place to go. That is a more useful pairing than five lures competing to do exactly the same job.

Reach offshore fish deliberately

A crankbait can search at an appropriate running depth when it has room to dive. A weighted plastic or jig can work suitable bottom. A swimbait can pass through suspended fish. Look at fish position before choosing among them. The deepest lure in the box is not automatically the summer lure, and bottom contact is not mandatory simply because shore is far away.

Keep topwater specific

Use a frog for surface vegetation that would foul trebles, a walking bait for open water and a popper when you want to linger near a target. Pick the job first. A surface strike is fun enough to make us irrational, so decide how long to test it before one missed blowup takes ownership of the morning.

Expand after you find the gap

Add a lure because you need a different fall, depth, cover route or profile. Begin with a few colors that give you a useful contrast. Spend the rest of the attention on casting angle, line condition and how the bait actually runs. The fish do not know how organized the spare tackle is.

Put it into practice

  • Choose the box for local cover and depth.
  • Pair a search bait with a deliberate follow-up.
  • Buy another lure only when you can name its job.
