Bass jig fishing: choose the head, feel the bite, get them out

Match a jig to rock, wood or grass, then learn the difference between useful contact and donating tackle.

One jig does not love every kind of cover

The skirt makes them look related, but head shape and hook design matter. A football head suits open rock and bottom work; a compact casting or flipping jig suits reachable wood; a swim jig is meant to travel through the water column and suitable vegetation. Pick for the route the jig must take. Our preference is to solve the snagging problem before arguing about whether the skirt needs three more orange strands.

Let the trailer change something useful

A bulky, active trailer adds movement and resistance. A compact trailer gives a smaller package and generally less action. Start with enough weight to follow the bait and reach the target, then reduce it if the jig crashes through the zone or buries into soft bottom. Check that the trailer sits straight and does not crowd the hook gap. A crooked chunk can make a carefully chosen jig behave badly.

Move it with the rod and recover the slack

Let the jig fall on controlled line, then drag, lift or swim it according to the cover. Use short movements around wood so you can feel a limb and ease over it instead of driving the hook home. On rock, pause after contact and test a different angle if the head wedges. Reel in the slack created by the rod movement without turning every pause into another pull.

The bite may be the absence of weight

A tap is easy. A line moving sideways, a jig that never seems to land, or unexpected heaviness can be the real clue. Reel down and set appropriately for the jig's hook and weedguard. Move the fish clear of cover before relaxing. Retie after rough contact and inspect the point. A damaged knot is a lousy way to learn that the stump was finally occupied.

Put it into practice

  • Choose head shape for the cover you must retrieve through.
  • Watch for a fall that stops early.
  • Inspect line and hook after hard contact.
