Get the hook out of the plastic's way
Insert the point through the nose, bring it out a short distance down, slide the bait to the hook's offset and rotate it. Lay the hook against the body to find the reentry point, then rig straight with the point protected as the cover requires. Leave room in the hook gap for the plastic to collapse. A thick bait jammed onto a small hook is a missed fish waiting for an appointment.
Use weight to control the fall
A sliding bullet weight helps the bait reach depth and enter cover. Start with enough to follow the presentation, then reduce it if the bait crashes past the useful zone or buries in soft bottom. Pegging keeps weight and bait together, which can help through tight vegetation or openings. An unpegged weight can separate during the fall. Choose the behavior you need rather than declaring one setup correct everywhere.
Fish the first fall carefully
Cast or pitch beside the target and allow controlled slack. Watch the line for a jump, sideways travel or an early stop. A bait swinging toward you on tight line may miss the opening entirely. Once it settles, use a short lift or drag, then pause. Around wood, ease over contact instead of pulling the hook hard into a branch.
Reel down before driving the hook
When the line moves or the bait feels unusually heavy or light, recover slack and set with enough force for the protected hook and tackle. Keep pressure and move the fish clear of cover. A wild swing into a pile of slack does less than a controlled set from contact. Inspect the plastic afterward because a shifted body can bury the point or block the gap.
Change what the retrieve is telling you
Spinning means rerig. Constant wedging means change angle, weight or route. Bites on the initial fall mean repeat the entry on similar targets. No response after a careful pass means inspect another depth or piece of cover. The Texas rig's versatility is useful only if you let it do different jobs.
Put it into practice
- Match hook gap to the plastic's thickness.
- Choose pegging for the desired fall through cover.
- Watch every fall and regain contact before setting.
