Current fishing: find the break and feed the bait through it

Read seams and sheltered pockets, place the boat deliberately, and use lure weight to control the drift.

Look beside the hardest flow

Fish often use objects and bottom changes that interrupt current. Inspect the seam beside a point, the protected side of a rock or a pocket behind cover. The visible surface can help you locate a change, but the flow near bottom may differ. Our starting bet is water where a fish can hold and intercept food without doing the aquatic equivalent of sprinting uphill.

Set the boat outside the presentation

Position so you can cast up or across the useful flow and let the lure reach depth before the target. Avoid parking in the very pocket you mean to fish. A shorter controlled cast can be better than a long one whose line bows downstream. Keep clear of navigation lanes, restricted dam areas and hazards; fishable current is different from current you can safely work.

Adjust weight to the drift you want

If the bait sweeps past above the fish, add weight, shorten the cast or change angle. If it wedges on bottom every time, reduce contact or choose another path. A jig, plastic or swimming bait can all be useful depending on where fish sit. Watch the line and repeat the route that carries the lure through the target, rather than simply casting harder into the flow.

Recheck when the water changes

Generation, rainfall and other changes can alter the seam or the useful side of an object. A waypoint marks the structure, not today's current pattern. If bites stop, watch the flow and inspect the fish position before switching five colors. Follow current conditions and posted restrictions rather than relying on a remembered schedule.

Land from a controlled position

Plan where the boat and fish will travel during the fight. Keep line away from the motor and avoid backing into hazards while focused on the fish. A good current spot should give you a repeatable presentation and a manageable landing, not a heroic story about almost getting swept into something.

Put it into practice

  • Fish the current break rather than only the fastest flow.
  • Let the lure reach depth before entering the target.
  • Reassess the seam after flow changes.
