Ledge fishing: find the group before grinding the bottom

Read the break, locate fish relative to it, and choose a cast that keeps the bait at the right depth.

A contour line is only an invitation

A ledge is a depth break, often along a channel or the edge of a flat. The map can put you near it, but it cannot tell you which hundred yards hold fish today. We would rather spend the first part of the stop looking than spend an hour proving that a perfectly good crankbait can hit empty bottom. Check turns, points, hard patches and places where bait collects.

Look above the bottom too

Use sonar to compare the top, face and lower side of the break. Note whether returns sit tight to bottom or suspend off the edge. That distinction decides whether a dragging bait belongs in the conversation. Current can reposition a group, so observe the present flow rather than assuming yesterday's upstream side remains productive. If you cannot find fish or forage, examine another section before unpacking the entire tackle box.

Set the cast before selecting the color

Hold outside the group and choose a direction that keeps the bait in the observed depth band. A deep crankbait needs diving room before it reaches the fish. A football jig or worm can work bottom when the cover allows it. A swimbait can pass through suspended fish. Cast across and along the break deliberately; the angle that keeps the bait near fish longest is often more useful than another paint scheme.

Have a second look when the bite quits

A group may slide, suspend, scatter or simply stop responding. Check its position before increasing lure weight by reflex. Try a different speed or direction, then a slower follow-up if the fish remain. If the group is gone, leave and check another feature. Ledge fishing rewards returning to a productive area at the right time, but an old waypoint does not collect rent from the fish.

Put it into practice

  • Locate fish above, on or below the break.
  • Give diving baits room to reach the group.
  • Recheck position before changing every lure.
