Spinnerbait fishing: choose the blades and keep the depth honest

Use flash and vibration around cover, learn the running depth, and change speed where a fish has a reason to strike.

Let the blades fit the job

Spinnerbaits combine flash, vibration and a skirted hook behind an overhead wire arm. Broad blades generally create more resistance and lift; narrow blades let a bait travel differently at a given pace. Treat that as a starting relationship, then watch your actual lure. Our favorite blade combination is the one that runs correctly through the water we are fishing. The tackle aisle does not need another election.

Check it beside the boat

Make sure the blade turns freely and the wire and skirt are not fouled. Retrieve it where you can see whether it tracks upright. If it rolls, change speed or inspect the frame and trailer. Select head weight with running depth in mind. A heavy head with large blades is not guaranteed to stay deep when you burn it back.

Bring it alongside something

Cast past a laydown edge, grass line or rocky transition and establish the retrieve before reaching the useful water. Work alongside cover with a clear line path. A brief speed change or controlled drop beside an opening can break the rhythm. Do not pull an exposed hook directly into every fork in a fallen tree and then blame the concept.

Slow down without losing the blade

For a deeper presentation, let the bait sink and retrieve at a pace where the blade still works. Watch line angle and occasional contact to learn its depth. If it rises out of the zone, compare a heavier or less buoyant configuration, slower speed or a different cast. If it drags constantly, make the opposite adjustment.

Use follows as information

A follower says the bait was noticed. Try a speed change, smaller profile or different route before abandoning the whole area. Inspect hook sharpness after missed fish and use tackle that keeps steady pressure on the strike. If the fish bite on a turn beside cover, repeat that event deliberately instead of simply celebrating the skirt color.

Put it into practice

  • Check blade rotation and upright tracking.
  • Choose weight and blades together for depth.
  • Repeat speed changes near useful cover.
