Boat owner, bass fisherman, electronics addict, trip planner and the guy trying to prove fishing can pay for fishing. If a trip produces a fish, a story, a waypoint, a receipt or a business idea, Matt probably saved it.

Crew File 0001 · Matt Barlow · Crew File 0000 · Crook'd Hook'rDrop the needle →Matt is the reason Crook’d Hook’r exists in the first place. He is a Tennessee bass fisherman, boat owner, trip planner, gear junkie, content wrangler and the guy constantly asking the question that drives the whole brand: Can fishing pay for fishing?
Most people go fishing and come home with pictures. Matt comes home with pictures, GPS data, receipts, tournament notes, sonar screenshots, business ideas, sponsor prospects, three new website features and at least one reason to redesign something. That is basically Crook’d Hook’r.
He fishes because he loves it, but he also pays attention to everything around the fishing: ramps, lakes, gear, travel, tournaments, restaurants, lodging, electronics, bait shops, stories, people, mistakes and all the stupid little moments that make a fishing trip worth remembering.
If there is a way to turn any of that into useful content, a better trip, a product, a report or enough revenue to buy more gas and tackle, Matt is probably already working on it.
Matt is serious about bass fishing without being particularly interested in acting serious about it. He likes good electronics, useful fishing information, big fish, competitive events and having enough structure around a trip that nothing valuable gets forgotten.
That structure usually lasts until the boat leaves the ramp. After that, Crook’d Hook’r rules apply. Matt runs the boat, watches the electronics, tracks conditions, saves waypoints, takes pictures, records catches and occasionally attempts to maintain order among people who have absolutely no interest in helping him maintain order.
Matt believes the fish are always trying to tell you something — sometimes through water temperature, current, bait, structure or forward-facing sonar, and sometimes by refusing to bite anything for six straight hours while Mushy confidently explains where they should be.
Matt’s preferred response is usually to collect more data. Whether more data actually helps is a separate question.
Matt started with a boat, some fishing buddies and a joke of a name. Then he added a website. Then trip tracking. Then media. Then tournaments. Then lake intelligence. Then waypoints. Then sponsors. Then a knowledge graph.
At some point it became unclear whether Crook’d Hook’r was still a fishing brand or an attempt to organize the entire recreational fishing industry. Nobody has stopped him yet, so the investigation continues.
For the record, Matt already has fishing gear. Quite a bit of it. That has never once prevented another rod, another reel, another box of tackle, another piece of electronics, another tournament entry or another perfectly defensible reason to stop at the tackle shop. Enable the problem responsibly.
Catch fish. Document it. Make enough money doing it to go catch more fish. That is the job, the business plan and the excuse for whatever gets built next.FISHING PAYS FOR FISHING.This profile is part fishing bio, part Crook’d Hook’r personnel file and entirely aware that nobody needed this much infrastructure to go bass fishing.
