Behind the Track

The story before the beat dropped

The name started during a Minn Kota Owners tournament at Pickwick when Marshall spotted a questionable little bar-and-bait-shop-looking place down the road. The joke followed Matt home, climbed aboard the next boat and became official when the decal appeared during a Chickamauga birthday trip.

Lyrics
[Intro] "Can fishing pay for fishing?" Matt keeps asking that. I don't know. But fishing keeps paying for me. [Verse 1] Every trip starts with a budget, Every budget starts real cute. Gas, hotel, little tackle— Then Matt walks into Bass Pro too. One bait becomes a handful, One rod becomes a pair. Then something new for Mega Live Apparently needs to live somewhere. He calls it an investment, Says one day it'll all make sense. I just keep getting prettier At fishing's expense. [Chorus] Can fishing pay for fishing? Baby, I don't know. But fishing keeps paying for me Everywhere we go. Fresh gas in my tank, New toys on my deck. Another little upgrade Matt ain't told himself about yet. Can fishing pay for fishing? We're gonna have to wait and see. But judging by the money spent— Fishing's paying Pretty good for me. [Verse 2] Tournament pays a little? Great, we're finally in the black. Before we make it home, Matt done spent the winnings twice right back. Catch one good largemouth, Now we need the bait she ate. Catch one on a different color— Better order every shade. Then there's line and hooks And weights and things That apparently disappear. Funny how the fishing budget Gets more flexible every year. [Chorus] Can fishing pay for fishing? That's the dream, apparently. But every time some money comes in, Matt spends it back on me. New mount on the console, Fresh equipment underneath. If fishing ain't paying for fishing— It's definitely Paying for me. [Verse 3] Then he built a whole website To investigate the case. Lake intel, trips and tournaments, Every fish and every place. Songs about the stupid things That happen when we roam. Pictures so twenty years from now We can bring those stories home. Maybe that's the part His spreadsheet doesn't see. Not every fishing profit Comes back as currency. Some comes back as laughter. Some comes back as time. Some comes back as memories You couldn't otherwise buy. [Bridge] So... Is fishing paying for fishing? Financially? Let's not rush the audit. But are we getting our money's worth? Now you're asking The right question. [Final Chorus] Can fishing pay for fishing? Maybe one day we'll see. Until then keep chasing that dream And keep taking care of me. Fill my tank, Load the rods, Point my nose where we wanna be. 'Cause fishing may not pay for fishing yet— But baby... Fishing pays for me.
