Start with the question the screen must answer
Your XPLORE can show you a brush pile. It cannot stop you from parking on top of it and wondering why nothing bites. Here is how we would put the information to work. At the console, use the chart to choose a point, channel edge or flat worth examining. Then use imaging to see what is actually there. At the bow, the question changes to where the boat and lure sit relative to the target. An XPLORE display can support different jobs, but its available sonar depends on the connected transducers. Buying a display does not put every imaging accessory on the boat.
Search beside a point before driving across it
With compatible Side Imaging connected, idle a straight line beside the point so you can examine its shoulder. Use a range that makes individual objects readable. If a pile is too small to distinguish, narrow the range and make another pass closer to it rather than adding more windows to the screen. Look for a return with a recognizable shape and shadow, then compare it from another direction if its identity is uncertain.
Put the waypoint on the object
When the object is still in sonar history, use the cursor to select the target and the waypoint function to save that location. A current-position mark can instead save the boat's location after you have passed. Return slowly and confirm the mark before relying on it. Give it a useful name such as BRUSH-POINT and record the depth you observed. XPLORE's One-Boat Network app connection also lets you review and manage waypoints away from the display.
Approach as an angler, not as another scan pass
Stop outside your intended casting distance. Position the boat so the lure can reach its working depth before it enters the cover. For example, a crankbait needs room to dive before it reaches the pile; a jig needs a path that will not drag the line across every branch. Use the chart to hold the relationship between boat and target, then choose the sonar view that helps with that presentation.
Add live sonar without losing the basics
If MEGA Live 2 is installed, start with a short cast toward a known target and identify the lure by lifting it. Rotate the beam slightly if the lure leaves the picture. Once bait and target are visible together, change retrieve depth or speed and watch the response. A blank view can mean the beam is pointed beside the cast. It does not establish that the waypoint is empty.
Make the next visit easier
Save the productive casting position separately when the angle matters. After the trip, rename new marks and back up navigation data. Use the linked XPLORE starter resources for the exact controls and installation documents. The practical test is simple: can you return to the object and reproduce the cast that reached it? If not, improve the mark or boat-position note before spending more time adjusting colors.
Put it into practice
- Mark the object in sonar history rather than your current track.
- Leave enough approach distance for the lure to reach depth.
- Save the casting position when the angle produces the bite.
