MEGA Live 2: find your lure and fish the beam

Understand MEGA Live 2 compatibility, learn what moving the transducer changes, and keep a presentation in view long enough to learn from it.

Check the display generation before buying parts

Before you spend the morning chasing every bright speck, learn to find your own bait. That one skill makes the rest of live sonar a lot less aggravating. Humminbird lists XPLORE, APEX with software 5.060 or later, and SOLIX G3 with 5.060 or later for MEGA Live 2. HELIX and SOLIX G1/G2 are not supported. Existing TargetLock installations need the specified software and may need an adapter; use the linked compatibility page for the serial-number requirement. This is a hardware decision worth resolving before mounting the transducer.

Learn direction with a stationary object

Begin with an isolated piling or other known submerged target at a safe distance. Aim the transducer toward it, then rotate slowly past it. Watch the return enter and leave the view. This connects the direction indicator to the water in front of you. Repeat with a shorter range so the object is easy to recognize. A wide search range makes small returns smaller and can make this first exercise needlessly frustrating.

Find the bait before chasing a fish

Make a short cast with a lure you can track and let it sink through the view. Lift it deliberately: the return that moves with your rod is your reference. If it disappears, stop the retrieve briefly and sweep the beam a little to either side. A lure can leave a narrow slice of water while remaining at the same depth. Increasing sensitivity cannot bring an off-beam lure back into the beam.

Cast through the fish's level

Once you can see both bait and target, cast far enough beyond the fish to let the lure reach the intended depth before it passes. A fish ten feet down does not require the lure to scrape bottom beneath it. Watch whether the fish rises, follows, turns away or stays still. Change either the passing depth or the speed on the next presentation so the result teaches you something specific.

Know what the mount is doing

A shaft-mounted transducer turns when the trolling motor turns. A separate pole or compatible TargetLock arrangement changes that relationship. If the image swings away during boat corrections, first watch the mount rather than assuming the fish vanished. When clutter appears only with motor use, record that condition and follow the installation troubleshooting guidance. Build a clean short-range picture before attempting long casts to faint returns.

Put it into practice

  • Establish beam direction on one stationary target.
  • Identify the lure by moving it deliberately.
  • Change passing depth or speed, one at a time.
