Humminbird SOLIX: build useful views and avoid source confusion

Make an existing SOLIX easier to fish with by separating search, mapping and bow presentations—and knowing which generation you own.

The SOLIX name does not identify every capability

If your SOLIX spends more time showing menus than showing fishable water, simplify it. We would rather have two readable views than six tiny windows competing for attention. Find the generation as well as the screen size before planning accessories. For example, Humminbird's MEGA Live 2 list includes SOLIX G3 with the required software, but excludes G1 and G2. An older SOLIX can still be useful for its supported sonar and mapping jobs. Decide which missing capability you actually need before treating a new accessory as a universal upgrade.

Organize the console around an idling pass

Use a chart to follow the depth feature and give side imaging enough space to show objects clearly. When something deserves a closer look, enlarge the imaging view or switch to a downward view for the crossing pass. A permanent four-way split can make a large screen behave like several very small screens. Keep only the information needed for the job you are doing.

Check sources when moving to the bow

Networked sonar is convenient because one display can show another transducer's information. It is also easy to misread. If you are lowering a bait at the bow while viewing a stern transducer, the bottom may be accurate for a different part of the boat. Confirm the selected source on the fishing view. A discrepancy between two screens can simply be two sensors looking at different water.

Make one offshore stop from start to finish

Choose a point, idle across its edge, mark the structure using the appropriate cursor tool and return from outside casting distance. Use the chart to establish boat position, then the bow sonar to check the fishing depth. After a bite, note where the lure was relative to the object. This exercise reveals whether your views and shortcuts support fishing better than changing settings while drifting aimlessly.

Keep upgrades separate from diagnosis

Back up navigation data before updating. Use software intended for the exact generation and read the release instructions for the connected equipment. If a previously clear image becomes confusing, first compare source, range and transducer position with the working setup. Document a restart, missing source or interference pattern precisely so support can investigate the actual failure rather than a vague complaint that the picture looks wrong.

Put it into practice

  • Record SOLIX generation before selecting accessories.
  • Check the bow view's transducer source.
  • Use one marked point to practice the whole search-to-cast sequence.
