Moon phase and bass fishing: keep perspective and go fishing

Use moon information as context in a log, with more weight on the water, season and time you can actually fish.

The moon does not owe us a bite window

Moon charts make tidy promises, which is probably why anglers like them. A trip has too many other variables for one symbol to explain the outcome. Our staff approach is to keep moon phase in the notes if it interests you and spend the available fishing time on suitable water. A free Saturday is a perfectly respectable reason to launch.

Record time and effort with the catch

If you want to compare moon information, log when you fished, how long you fished, the lake area and the conditions. Include trips with no fish. Five catches during a predicted period mean less if those are the only hours you ever fish. Compare similar seasons and habitats before claiming a pattern.

Do not let the chart overrule visible activity

If bait is moving on a point and fish are responding, stay with the opportunity even if an app rates the hour poorly. If the chosen spot is empty, change depth or area rather than waiting for a countdown. Fish location and a controlled presentation give you decisions you can act on right now.

Keep night plans practical

Moonlight can change how bright a night feels, but clouds, terrain and local lighting also matter. Plan navigation, access and equipment for actual visibility, and check whether the site allows after-dark use. Do not assume a full moon makes unfamiliar water easy. We are happy to enjoy the moon; we are less interested in using it as a replacement for a working light and a sensible route.

Put it into practice

  • Record fishing effort as well as catches.
  • Follow visible feeding opportunities over app ratings.
  • Plan night access and visibility separately from moon phase.
